A clinical position as consultant in clinical biochemistry at the Department of Clinical Biochemistry at Copenhagen University Hospital - Herlev and Gentofte is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

The position is combined with a 5 year externally funded position as clinical professor of Clinical Biochemistry with special focus on genetically determined hyperlipidemia at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

With this new position the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT Organisation The department of Clinical Biochemistry is part of Copenhagen University Hospital - Herlev and Gentofte within The Capital Region of Denmark; the public health care provider in eastern Denmark with 1.8 million inhabitants. The department is led by a chief medical doctor and a chief biomedical laboratory technician. The additional leading team consists of 2 professors, 1 associate professor, 3 additional medical specialists in clinical biochemistry, and 7 department biomedical laboratory technicians. In total the department employs 200 people and has a yearly budget of ~140 million DKK. The research of the department and the university related tasks are led by the professors and an associate professor.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department: The department provides 24-hour laboratory services to Herlev and Gentofte Hospital and other hospitals, and laboratory services to the general practitioners/specialist doctors and psychiatry in the surrounding area, as well as screening analyses for The Capital Region. The department produces per year app. 15 million laboratory results on more than 300 parameters including specialized autoimmune and genetic analyses and is DANAK accredited to the ISO15189 standard. The department provides educational and counselling services for clinicians, junior doctors, medical students, and other personnel.

The research of the department is focused on heritability, diagnostics, prevention, and treatment of ischaemic cardiovascular diseases, lung diseases, cancer, and other multifactorial diseases. A special focus is the development and validation of blood-borne markers of risk, prognosis, and prediction of treatment response for multifactorial diseases. The department hosts and runs the Copenhagen General Population Study with over 150,000 participants, as well as many patient cohorts in collaboration with the clinical departments of Herlev and Gentofte Hospital and other hospitals.

Research and teaching With the new position as consultant in clinical biochemistry and clinical professor of clinical biochemistry with special focus on genetically determined hyperlipidemia, the Department of Clinical Biochemistry wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.

Qualifications Applicants must be board-certified specialist in Clinical Biochemistry. Applicants must be board-certified specialist in Clinical Biochemistry. The applicant must have very strong backgrounds in clinical biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetic epidemiology, as well as in analysing large datasets required for both routine and research department functions. The applicant must have proven experience in teaching and supervising of medical students, PhD students, and/or post docs. The applicant is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills and previous documented experience in heading laboratory analytical sections is advantageous.

Conditions In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Herlev and Gentofte Hospital.

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the Department of Clinical Biochemistry. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full-time secretary position from the Department of Clinical Biochemistry. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the Department of Clinical Biochemistry and Herlev and Gentofte Hospital.
