Experience with project management in LMIC
As our new colleague, you will be responsible for co-managing the project and keep track of deliverables. You will be working with a strong group of consortium partners in Africa, in addition to FAO and SSI, to further build sequencing capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa. This will include support for procurements of necessary equipment and reagents, continued development of genomic surveillance networks across the region, and identifying training needs and organize relevant capacity building activities across the regional sites. 

You are expected to support the project’s network of regional sequencing centers and stakeholders, monitor progress and risks, and prepare sustainability and exit plans for the activities. 

You will be responsible for maintaining relations with project partners, collaborators and stakeholders through regular conference calls and meetings, as well as ensuring synergies with other Fleming Fund grants. Moreover, you will have a substantial role ensuring effective dialog and collaboration with the Fleming Fund, hereunder reporting quarterly progress related to both the technical achievements and the financial expenditures.

As part of your role, you will visit several Fleming Fund priority countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to attend meetings, workshops, and other activities. It is therefore key that you are able and willing to travel and work and interact well with other cultures, as well as individuals with various professional backgrounds. 

Primary areas of responsibility:

  • Coordinate project activities with funding bodies, project partners including FAO and ASLM, and stakeholders such as Africa CDC, PGI and WHO.
  • Manage the existing efforts by supporting the implemented sequencing and bioinformatics capacity.
  • Plan and organize training courses and capacity building efforts.
  • Grant management support incl. reporting and monitoring of financial consumption.
  • Drive sustainability and exit efforts, incl. collaboration with other Fleming Fund projects. 
  • Travel, when needed, to assist in the strategic and implementational efforts. 

Our expectations of you
We are looking for a visionary profile that thrives on turning exciting challenges into solutions based on curiosity and an open mind for entering new paths when necessary. 

We expect you to hold at least a Master’s degree, preferably within public health, microbiology, epidemiology or a similar area and have several years of experience successfully managing large scale international health/development projects in LMIC. You are passionate about driving change and assisting local progress. You hold the necessary team player mentality and skills to create overview and structure that will steer the international team towards the short- and long-term goals of the project. You are comfortable representing the project in different political and cultural environments. Previous experience working with grant application and sustainability and exit planning will be preferred. 

Essential expertise would include:

  • Documented experience with project management and coordination.
  • Proven track record working with large-scale international development/health projects in LMIC. 
  • Experience with stakeholder management and engaging constructively in large, international, and multi-disciplinary environments.
  • Ability to self-manage and work independently, as well as to plan and execute complex tasks.
  • Ability to convey ideas and strategies into actions, solve problems and work with flexible project plans and goals. 
  • Willingness and ability to travel several times a year to multiple Sub-Saharan countries. 
  • Good communication skills in English, oral and written.

Knowledge about whole genome sequencing and AMR is preferable, however not a requirement.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).

The position is a full-time position. Starting date is preferably the 1st of September 2023 (or according to mutual agreement). The period of the project employment is until 1st of March 2025.
