A clinical position as consultant of breast surgery at the Department of Breast Surgery at Herlev and Gentofte Hospital is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Surgery with special focus on breast cancer surgery at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

With this new position the Department of Breast Surgery, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

About the Department We are the largest department of breast surgery in Denmark treating more than 1600 breast cancer patients each year and running 21 operating rooms weekly, the majority as one-day surgery. The department is an independent breast surgery department headed by a breast surgeon who reports directly to the managing director. You will be part of a team of 20 experienced breast surgery specialists and 65 trained breast-care nurses. The department has a highly specialized function within breast surgery and treats all types of patients. We have oncoplastic and reconstructions in collaboration with the departments of Plastic surgery at both Herlev Hospital and Rigshospitalet. We have a close formalized collaboration with especially X-ray, pathologists and oncologists, with two parallel MDT meetings every morning. The department is affiliated with the University of Copenhagen and has students in clinical education. The department has a long tradition in breast cancer research with national and international collaboration and is one of the leading centers for research in breast cancer surgery in Denmark.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the Department You will be responsible for further development of breast cancer research and breast surgery research in the department of Breast Surgery at Herlev and Gentofte Hospital. You will be the head of a research team at the department, including nurse research. You will participate in maintaining and developing national and international contacts and secure funding, recruitment of younger talented researchers, and guiding the group in Danish research legislation. It is expected that your research contributes to the national development of breast cancer surgery and guidelines through close collaboration with the DBCG. You will be supervising PhD students, candidate students and younger doctors in breast cancer surgery research at the department. You will be overall responsible for teaching and clinical stay of medical students in the department and be responsible for lectures and class teaching in breast surgery and breast cancer at the faculty of health and medical sciences Copenhagen University.

Research and teaching With the new position as consultant in Breast Surgery and clinical professor of Surgery with special focus on breast cancer surgery the Department of Breast Surgery wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.

Qualifications Applicants must be board-certified specialist in Surgery.

We expect that you can read and speak Danish and that your Danish knowledge will be so good, that after the first year in the position, you can handle the complete patient treatment.

Conditions In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Herlev and Gentofte Hospital.

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of the department of Breast Surgery. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full-time secretary position from the department of Breast Surgery. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the department of Breast Surgery, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital.
